Nurse Supervisor

Registered Nurse (RN) Primary Objective:

  • Provide nursing care to Aurora Plains Academy residents and employees as allowed by Aurora Plains Academy Policy and Nurse Practice Act.

Registered Nurse (RN) Primary Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in the development and implementation of Aurora Plains Academy nursing role/function.
  • Participate in unit clinical staff and multi-disciplinary meetings to provide nursing input in the evaluation, treatment, and discharge planning for individual residents.
  • Provide nursing consultation for staff throughout the program regarding resident nursing/medical care and needs.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth working knowledge of the use of psychotropic medication including possible benefits/side effects
  • Function as a team member in all interactions with residents and staff.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with residents.
  • Work closely with the Department Director and other health care providers to ensure all orders for medical and psychiatric treatments are implemented and the appropriate records and processing are completed.
  • Administer medication and provide nursing treatment as prescribed.
  • Prepare and present medical/psychiatric staffing reports.
  • Complete intake nursing assessments on residents.
  • Prioritize responsibilities and complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Identify own learning needs and seek the information to improve knowledge/skills.
  • Actively and willingly participates in the decision-making process.
  • Objectively obtains facts and information pertinent to decision-making.
  • Make decisions within the guidelines of the job description.

Registered Nurse (RN) Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Must have an Associate Degree or higher in Nursing.
  • Must be certified by the South Dakota Board of Nursing
  • Must have excellent organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule with varying shifts.
  • May not have on record a substantiated report of child abuse or neglect.

Registered Nurse (RN) Working Conditions:

  • May spend a considerable amount of time walking and standing.
  • Night, weekend and holiday shifts are required.
  • On-call shifts are required; must be able to work with short notice.

Case Manager

Primary Objective:

Provide quality case management services and augment therapy services provided to residents in care.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Documentation Responsibilities:

  • Maintain required records, reports, and statutes for administrative purposes.
  • Complete records in a timely manner and with professional
  • Verify and update resident listing and contacts information.
  • Track each resident level, level eligibility, and ensure completion of proper level-related documentation.
  • Maintain, update and review resident charts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Compile and distribute calling/visiting lists for residents, based on the direction of the placing agency and the Aurora Plains Academy policies.

2. Communication Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the treatment process of each assigned resident through effective communication with all service areas.
  • Facilitate contact between residents and their placing agencies and/or family, as assigned.
  • Reporting of major incidents to state, Academy and resident workers, following APA reporting procedures. Incudes on-call reporting of major incidents as well.

3. Resident Intake and Discharge Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all documentation to the referring agency is delivered in a timely fashion.
  • Provide verbal and/or written communication to placing agencies.
  • Participate in intake meetings at the time of admission of assigned residents.
  • Update electronic and non-electronic records with resident information and discharge data as it occurs.

4. Resident Care Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an inventory of the belongings of assigned residents.
  • Monitor resident visits as outlined in the Resident/Parent Handbook and APA policy manual.
  • May be required to assist in resident outings, medical appointments, or home visits.

Non-Essential Job Functions:

  • Ensure Compliance to phone call log binder procedures for assigned unit(s).
  • Complete, implement and record findings from a resident survey on a quarterly basis.
  • Provide coverage on living units as assigned.
  • Perform regular office tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Typing
  • Filing
  • Organizing
  • Answering phone calls, responding to voicemail, performing courtesy coverage for other Case Workers phones, as needed.
  • Maintains professional growth by participating in the Staff Development Program.
  • Be a team member and develop positive and professional relations with all staff.
  • Understand and abide by laws and statutes governing child abuse and neglect reporting.

Knowledge and Skill Requirement:

  • A staff member who provides Case Management Services must have at least a Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or other behavioral science, or an equivalent combination of experience in case management and at least two years of higher education.
  • May not have on record a substantiated record of child abuse or neglect.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate well with State representatives, social workers, therapists, psychologists, and resident family and friends.

Clinical/Family Therapist

Primary Objective:

Ensure a quality therapeutic program through a multi-disciplinary treatment team approach.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ability to make and document sound clinical judgment regarding the care and treatment of all youth.
  • Develop and conduct specialized group therapy sessions for a cross-section of youth in addressing current and specific treatment needs.
  • Provide weekly individual therapy for each resident assigned. 
  • Provide group therapy for the youth of the assigned unit(s) up to five times weekly. 
  • Assess and provide family therapy as prescribed in the Individual Treatment Plan. 
  • Appropriately identify the need to and request assistance program solving/supervision regarding clinical issues with youth.
  • Through the multi-disciplinary team approach, develop and implement Individual Treatment Plans for each assigned resident in a timely manner and in conjunction with the referring agency, parent/guardian, and child.
  • Coordinate the treatment process of each assigned resident through effective communication with all service areas. 
  • Active involvement in the development and implementation of each resident's Individualized Education Plan.
  • Act as a liaison and maintain professional relationships with placing agencies and families of youth. Identify with each agency and family the frequency is to be no less than twice-monthly basis, and often weekly.
  • Provide quality services to placing agencies by maintaining effective verbal and written communication with the identified frequency and, additionally, in the event of special occasions. 
  • Conduct clinical staffing and treatment plan reviews on at least a quarterly basis for each resident assigned. 
  • Minimum of one hour per week of face-to-face clinical supervision. This supervision includes a review of documentation (Staffing reports, individual treatment plans, discharge summaries, and progress notes), review and discussion of active cases, direct observation of treatment, and adherence to job description expectations. The primary focus of clinical supervision is to ensure that each resident has an individualized treatment plan and is receiving quality care.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Complete paperwork assignments on time. 
  • Chart therapy contact (group, individual, and family therapy, and occasional case management contact) daily. 
  • Provide supervision of youth during, before, and after individual therapy, and in other settings to contribute to the therapeutic milieu.
  • Ensures continued training appropriate to the needs of the population served. 
  • Have a working knowledge of and implement all expectations pertinent to resident care from entities such as South Dakota Licensure Ch. 67. 
  • Be a team member and develop positive and professional relationships with all staff. 
  • Demonstrates and practices the use of abuse risk management strategies and peer to peer abuse prevention to help maintain a safe environment. 

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Must have a Master's Degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or other behavioral science.
  • Must hold current licensure or certification if such is available in the staff member's applicable field of practice. 
  • May not have on record a substantiated report of child abuse or neglect.

Shift Supervisor

Shift Supervisor Primary Objective:
Responsible for maintaining a building-wide therapeutic milieu and ensuring the safety and security of all occupants of Aurora Plains Academy.  

Shift Supervisor Essential Job Functions:
1. Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure campus for residents, staff, and visitors.
            a. Ensure all Emergency calls are responded to in a timely manner by, TSS and/or other emergency responders. 
            b. Provide direct crisis intervention in accordance with approved techniques. 
            c. Assist staff in providing proactive interventions. 
2. Ensures adequate staff coverage for all units and TSS department. 
              a. Coordinate off-campus special events, visits, etc. communicate the schedule in a timely manner to staff.
              b. Cover open Shift Supervisor/TSS shifts due to illness, vacation, tardiness, position vacancy or emergencies. 
3. Responsible for maintaining open and current communication between line staff, TSS Department, Unit Managers, Therapists, and Case Managers.
              a. Assist other Shift Supervisors in preparing for daily pre-shift and TSS meeting.  
4. Responsible for on-going staff development. 
              a. Prepare, plan and implement training of staff in program facilitation and techniques. 

Shift Supervisor Non-Essential Functions:
1. Maintain effective and efficient communication with the on-call therapist as needed. 
2. At all times represent Aurora Plains Academy in a positive, professional manner. 
3. Be a team member and develop positive and professional relationships with staff. 
4. Comply with all policies, rules, and regulations established by Aurora Plains Academy as a condition of employment. 
5. Ensure a safe and secure environment at all times. Utilize approved intervention techniques whenever necessary.
6. Understand and abide by laws and statutes governing child abuse and neglect reporting. 

Experience: 
Prefer two (2) or more years of progressive management experience in a social service setting. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Responsible for direct supervision of TSS and indirect supervision of line staff. 

Qualifications:
1. Must be at least 21 years of age. 
2. Knowledgeable in local, state and federal laws, including the South Dakota Department of Social Service and Department of Corrections guidelines. 
3. Proficient in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. 
4. Excellent communication skills, written and oral. 
5. Excellent supervisory skills; motivates and disciplines employees. Active involvement in the development of personnel and demonstrates strong leadership skills.
